The four windmills of the Aarlanderveen four-mill complex, the only working four-mill complex in the world, drain the Drooggemaakte Polder on the Westzijde in Aarlanderveen. You might even hear a black-tailed godwit or a skylark singing by the Reeuwijkse Plassen in this bird-rich landscape.</p> </blockquote>

From the Holterberg you descend to a more open area to Espelo, popularly called Splo. There are about 150 scattered farms where the residents have close ties. Together they hold (world) records such as making the largest Easter fire, throwing pitchforks and making a snowman; unique in the Netherlands.</p> </blockquote>

Hiked part 25/25 of the Veluwe Wander Trail, 20.2 kilometres from Hoenderloo to Schaarsbergen.</p>

The final stage of the Veluwe Wander Trail led from Hoenderloo through the heath and pine woods of De Hoge Veluwe National Park, past the hunting lodge Sint Hubertus and on to Schaarsbergen. Along the way I saw red deer grazing under the trees and a sand lizard resting in the grass. The walk ended on a long brick avenue lined with lime trees, closing a journey of 25 stages across the Veluwe.</p> </blockquote>

Walked from Otterlo through De Hoge Veluwe National Park to Hoenderloo. The route crossed pine forest, sandy heath, beech avenues and a marsh boardwalk, with a stop by the Saint Hubertus hunting lodge. Spring leaves were just out and the sun shone all day.</p> </blockquote>

A long walk through the Hoge Veluwe National Park, with woods at the start and end and wide open heath in the middle. I saw deer in the heather and a Mouflon grazing on its own. The trail finished in Otterlo, where a small memorial honours the Canadian troops who freed the village in 1945.</p> </blockquote>

Left Hoog Soeren past thatched farms and a small chapel, then crossed the golf course into beech and pine woods. The route opened onto wide heathland with sandy tracks and scattered pines, before passing a farmhouse with goats and a Christmas tree nursery. Reached Garderen by the old windmill and church, with the streets still dressed in orange bunting for King's Day.</p> </blockquote>

Left Elspeet along a quiet lane and walked past an old brick farmhouse dated 1788. The route then went through the Gortelsche Bos, with beech and pine woods, sandy heath clearings and bright green larch rides. The stage ended at Echoput under tall beech trees along the cycle path.</p> </blockquote>

Walked from Garderen past the Canadian war memorial and out onto the open heath of the Elspeterheide. The sky was grey at first but cleared later, and the path crossed a small stream, ran past farmhouses and cherry blossom trees, and passed a Dutch windmill. The stage finished on the village square in Elspeet.</p> </blockquote>

Left Castle Rosendael behind and threaded through beech woods in full spring green before opening onto the heaths and pine forests of De Beekhuizen and Schaarsbergen. A graffiti-covered tunnel ducked under the A12 motorway, then the trail wound past a war memorial and a small brick chapel on its way into Arnhem. The final kilometres drifted through Sonsbeek Park, ponds, a waterfall, a fountain, egrets and Egyptian geese, before finishing beneath the curved roof of Arnhem Centraal.</p> </blockquote>

From Vierhouten the trail leads through pine and spruce forest onto the wide open heathland, dotted with solitary Scots pines under dramatic skies. After crossing a second stretch of heath, the route passes thatched-roof farms and a historic schoolhouse before entering green farmland with tree-lined lanes and grazing cattle. The final section follows a canal past herons and geese to Kasteel Cannenburch, a stately moated castle, before ending in the village of Vaassen.</p> </blockquote>

From Elspeet you walk past thatched-roof farms and green pastures before entering the vast Elspeetsche Heide, one of the largest heathlands on the Veluwe. Sandy trails wind through the open landscape of heather, dried grasses, and solitary pines and birches, with sweeping views in every direction. After crossing the undulating heath, the route leads through forest to the quiet village of Vierhouten.</p> </blockquote>

From Leuvenum you follow the Leuvenumse Beek, a stream that once powered nine mills, through quiet forest. After crossing the vast Staverdense Heide with its scattered pines and sweeping views, the route passes through more woodland before arriving in the village of Elspeet.</p> </blockquote>
