The Holy Bible - Nehemiah

The Holy Bible is a collection of books. So I have split them up. I will read it in 1 year, every day ~15 minutes of reading.

Why read it?

The Book of Nehemiah is a powerful narrative of restoration and leadership, detailing the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls and the spiritual renewal of God’s people after the Babylonian exile. It showcases Nehemiah, a cupbearer turned governor, whose faith and determination inspire a community to overcome opposition and reclaim their identity as God’s covenant people.

You’ll see God’s providence at work through Nehemiah’s prayers, strategic planning, and courage in the face of threats. This book is a rallying cry for perseverance, unity, and devotion to God’s purposes, offering timeless lessons for anyone seeking to rebuild broken places—whether physical, spiritual, or communal—in their own life.

Favourite quote

In Nehemiah 8:10, Nehemiah’s words to the people resonate with strength and joy:

"Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength."

This verse, spoken during the celebration of God’s Word being rediscovered, captures the transformative power of God’s presence. It reminds us that true strength comes from delighting in Him, encouraging us to find joy in God’s faithfulness even amid challenges.

What I Loved

The scene in Nehemiah 4, where the people rebuild the wall despite intense opposition, grips my heart. Nehemiah rallied them, saying, “Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren” (Nehemiah 4:14).

The image of workers building with one hand and holding a weapon in the other is so vivid—it’s faith and action intertwined. Their unity and resolve in the face of mockery and threats inspire me to press on in my own callings, trusting God’s protection and leaning on community to overcome obstacles.

Key Takeaway

Nehemiah teaches that God equips His people to accomplish His work through prayer, perseverance, and reliance on His strength. The rebuilding of the wall and the revival led by Ezra show that God’s plans prevail despite opposition when we trust Him and work together.

The book challenges us to confront challenges with courage, seek God’s guidance, and prioritise spiritual renewal, reminding us that God’s joy and faithfulness empower us to restore what’s broken and live fully for His glory.
