Relient K is the band's self-titled debut, first released in 2000, and I only found it years later while digging back through their catalogue. It is scrappy, fast, and funny, the sound of a young band working out who they are. Coming to it after the polished later records made its rough charm all the clearer.

Why listen?

The songs are quick and loud, all bright guitars and youthful energy. The production is lean and a little raw, which suits the material well. The lyrics swing between teenage jokes and honest, early faith without losing their grin. There is a real sense of a band finding its feet, mistakes and all. It is short, sharp, and easy to love.
