Relient K by Relient K

Relient K is the band's self-titled debut, first released in 2000, and I only found it years later while digging back through their catalogue. It is scrappy, fast, and funny, the sound of a young band working out who they are. Coming to it after the polished later records made its rough charm all the clearer.
Why listen?
The songs are quick and loud, all bright guitars and youthful energy. The production is lean and a little raw, which suits the material well. The lyrics swing between teenage jokes and honest, early faith without losing their grin. There is a real sense of a band finding its feet, mistakes and all. It is short, sharp, and easy to love.
Favourite song: My Girlfriend
A fast, funny burst of pop punk that sums up the band's early spirit. It is silly and tuneful in equal measure.
Marilyn Manson ate my girlfriend
Marilyn Manson ate my girlfriend
The song races by on big chords and a wink, gone before it outstays its welcome. It reminds me of a quick scramble up a familiar hill, no grand view needed, just the joy of the climb. Discovering it late only made that joy feel like a small gift.
Key takeaway
Relient K is a scrappy, charming debut worth hearing if you like your pop punk young and unguarded. A fun find from the back catalogue.
