Rattle and Hum by U2

Rattle and Hum by U2

Rattle and Hum is U2's 1988 album, a record I only came to properly this year. It is a hybrid, half live recordings from a huge tour and half new studio songs cut on American soil. The Irish band use it to chase the roots of rock, blues, gospel, and country, learning from the masters in real time. I was drawn to the messy ambition of it, a famous band still humble enough to study.

Why listen?

The sound is raw and varied, from arena roar to Memphis warmth, never quite settled. Bono sings with hunger, sometimes reaching past his grasp, which suits the project. The production keeps the rough live edges, the crowd and the room present. There is a clear thread of pilgrimage here, a band travelling to find where their music came from. It is uneven, and that is part of its honesty.

Favourite song: All I Want Is You

The closing ballad, a slow, aching song that grows into a long string driven swell. It is the album's most lasting moment.

You say you want diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want your story to remain untold
But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

The way the song stretches out, refusing to end, turns a simple love song into something vast and yearning. It reminds me of the final mile of a long day, when tired legs still want the view at the top. The track trades restraint for reach, and on this record that reach feels right.

Key takeaway

Rattle and Hum is a sprawling, uneven, deeply felt record, best for those who want U2 at their most searching. A fair recommendation.
