Pop by U2

Pop by U2

Pop is U2's 1997 album, the furthest the band pushed into dance, techno, and electronica before pulling back. Restless and ironic on the surface, it hides a real ache underneath, songs about faith, doubt, and the emptiness of plenty. I found it long after release and came to think it the band's most misjudged record.

Why listen?

The sound is loud and synthetic, loops and distortion piled high over the rhythm section. The production is bold and sometimes chaotic, a band chasing the club and not quite landing. The lyrics turn on longing and disillusion, prayer offered into a silence that does not answer. There is a real vulnerability beneath the glitter, doubt dressed in dance clothes. It is a flawed, fascinating record that rewards a fresh ear.

Favourite song: Wake Up Dead Man

A bleak, beautiful closer that prays straight into the dark, asking for help and half-expecting none. It is the band at its most naked.

Jesus, Jesus help me
I'm alone in this world
And a fucked-up world it is too
Tell me, tell me the story
The one about eternity
And the way it's all gonna be
Wake up, wake up dead man

The way the song turns a worn-out prayer into a raw, honest cry is its lasting strength. It reminds me of the lowest point on a long walk, soaked and tired, asking aloud for the weather to break. The song says faith sometimes sounds like a complaint shouted at the sky, and that has stayed with me.

Key takeaway

Pop is a flawed, brave experiment worth hearing with fresh ears. A gentle recommendation for the curious.
