MCMXC a.D. by Enigma

MCMXC a.D. is Enigma's 1990 debut, the album that put Michael Cretu's project on the map, and I discovered it long after its release. It splices Gregorian chant and ancient-sounding samples into slow, hypnotic electronic music. The theme circles around the sacred and the sensual, the old and the new pressed up against each other.

Why listen?

The sound is downtempo electronica woven through with chant, flutes, and spoken voices. The production is lush and cinematic, every layer placed for atmosphere. The album plays as long suites rather than separate songs, drifting between moods. There is a clear journey across it, dreamlike and unhurried, more felt than followed. It is music for the small hours, and it casts a strange, lasting spell.

Favourite song: Sadeness (Part I)

Part of the "Principles of Lust" suite and the album's worldwide hit, pairing solemn chant with a soft, insistent groove. It is the moment the whole concept clicks into place.

Sade, dis-moi
Sade, donne-moi
Sade, dis-moi
Pourquoi l'évangile du mal?
Sade, es-tu diabolique ou divin?
Sade, dis-moi

The way the chant floats over the beat feels like walking through an old stone cloister with a strange new music drifting in. The track holds the ancient and the modern in one breath. That uneasy, beautiful blend is what keeps me with the record.

Key takeaway

MCMXC a.D. blends chant and electronics into something hypnotic and strange. A dreamlike, atmospheric listen.
