Kutless by Kutless

Kutless by Kutless

Kutless is the band's self-titled debut, released in 2002, which I only found years on. It is hard-edged Christian rock from Portland, Oregon, built on heavy guitars and a strong, plain voice. The theme is honest faith under strain, doubt and need set against grace. I was drawn to its weight and its candour, the way it does not dress up the struggle.

Why listen?

The sound is loud and direct, riff-led, produced by Aaron Sprinkle with a clean punch. Jon Micah Sumrall sings with grit but never loses the tune. The production keeps the guitars forward and the songs tight. There is a path through the record from falling toward being held, a young band's first reach for hope. It rewards anyone who likes their faith songs with some force.

Favourite song: Tonight

A driving, urgent plea to turn before the chance is gone. It is the loud, beating heart of the record.

Can't you feel the music
All around you
Flashing lights
But love can fill your mind
Can't you feel the sounds
Of love flow through you

The way the line pushes forward lets the urgency settle rather than shout. It reminds me of pressing on toward shelter as the light begins to fail. The song does not fake its peak; it drives to it, and that drive is its gift.

Key takeaway

Kutless is a loud, honest debut, worth hearing if you like hard rock that wrestles with faith. A gentle recommendation.
