Electronica 2: The Heart of Noise by Jean-Michel Jarre

Electronica 2: The Heart of Noise is Jean-Michel Jarre's second volume in the Electronica project, the close of a two-part survey of electronic music built around guests. The French pioneer brings in players from many eras and styles, then shapes their work into one flowing, mostly wordless record. I came to it for that sweep across decades of sound, and it carried me along.

Why listen?

The sound ranges wide, from cold synth pulses to warm, melodic swells. The production is glossy and precise, each guest folded into Jarre's own signature. There are few words, so mood and texture do the talking, drifting between menace and wonder. There is a real sense of journey here, the record moving room to room like a long tour of a strange building. It is best heard whole and on good headphones.

A taut, urgent piece built with Edward Snowden's voice woven through, all tension and forward drive. It is the most charged moment on the record.

The way the track pairs a relentless pulse with a sense of being watched and pursued makes it feel both thrilling and uneasy. There are no sung words to lean on, only rhythm and atmosphere, yet the meaning lands hard. It reminds me of pushing fast along an exposed ridge with the weather closing in, every step quick and deliberate. The piece says some passages are meant to be crossed at speed, and that has stayed with me.
