Cutting Edge by Delirious?

Cutting Edge by Delirious?

Cutting Edge gathers the recordings Delirious? made in the mid-nineties for a youth event of the same name in Littlehampton, England, which I came to long after. It is raw, urgent worship, half rock band and half praise meeting, recorded close to the floor. The theme is whole-hearted devotion, faith sung loud by young people who meant it. I was drawn to its honesty and its part in reshaping how a generation worshipped.

Why listen?

The sound is rough and alive, guitar-driven, with a room that sings back. Martin Smith's voice carries the lead with plain conviction. The production keeps the energy and the edges, never tidy for its own sake. There is a path through these songs from longing toward release, the early shape of modern worship. It rewards anyone who values the root of a movement.

Favourite song: Did You Feel the Mountains Tremble?

A surging, joyful anthem of a world awakened to praise. It is the loud, glad heart of the collection.

Did you feel the mountains tremble
Did you hear the oceans roar
When the people rose to sing of
Jesus Christ the Risen One
Open up the doors and let the music play
Let the streets resound with singing
Songs that bring Your hope
Songs that bring Your joy

The way the line builds, plain and rising, lets the wonder settle rather than shout. It reminds me of standing on a high ridge while the weather moves across the hills below. The song does not fake its peak; it climbs to it, and that climb is its gift.

Key takeaway

Cutting Edge is raw, urgent worship, worth hearing as the root of songs still sung today. A gentle recommendation.
