Amazônia by Jean-Michel Jarre

Amazônia is Jean-Michel Jarre's 2021 album, written as a sound companion to an exhibition on the rainforest and its people. Jarre is a pioneer of electronic music, and here he builds a single, immersive work in nine connected parts. I came to it expecting his usual synth craft and found something closer to a film for the ears.
Why listen?
The piece moves as one long flow rather than separate songs, layering field sounds with deep electronics. The production is rich and binaural, built to surround the listener. There are no words, so the meaning lives in texture and motion, from dense canopy to open water. There is a clear journey from stillness to storm and back again. It rewards headphones and patience.
Favourite song: Amazônia Part 4
The work reaches a swelling, percussive peak here, with chants and synths rising together like a forest waking. The instrumental build is the most thrilling moment on the record, all drive and air with no need for words.
The way the sound thickens and then clears feels like walking into a clearing after dense trees, suddenly able to see the sky. It reminds me of cresting a wooded trail into open ground, the relief of light and space. The album keeps moving you through that kind of changing terrain.
Key takeaway
Amazônia is an immersive, wordless electronic journey. A rewarding pick for headphones and a quiet hour.
