The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass (2007), directed by Chris Weitz, is based on the first book of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. Dakota Blue Richards plays Lyra Belacqua, a young girl raised at Jordan College in Oxford who sets out on a journey to the frozen North to rescue stolen children.
In Lyra's world, every person has a daemon, an animal that walks beside them and speaks with them. It is their soul made visible. Nicole Kidman plays Mrs Coulter, a powerful and charming woman whose warmth hides something cold. Daniel Craig plays Lord Asriel, Lyra's uncle, a scholar and explorer who studies a mysterious substance called Dust. Sam Elliott plays Lee Scoresby, a Texan aeronaut who flies a balloon and joins Lyra's cause. The film runs one hour and 53 minutes.
Why You Should Watch
Dakota Blue Richards carries the film with a stubbornness and courage that feels right for Lyra. She does not wait to be saved. She lies, fights, and talks her way through every danger. Nicole Kidman plays Mrs Coulter with a smile that never quite reaches her eyes. She is the kind of villain who frightens you most when she is being kind.
The world building is the real draw. The daemons give every scene a layer that ordinary films lack. Watching a person's soul take the shape of a fox, a moth, or a snow leopard says more about them than any line of dialogue. The armoured bears of Svalbard look and sound magnificent. Ian McKellen voices Iorek Byrnison, a bear in exile who becomes one of Lyra's greatest allies. The film moves fast and looks grand. It rewards anyone who enjoys stories where children step into a world far bigger than they expected.
Favourite Quote
"I am not going to do what you want. I am going to do what is right."
Lyra says this when someone tries to use her. The line is plain and fierce. It captures who she is. She trusts her own compass, the real one and the golden one, more than any adult's instructions.
Takeaway
Authority is not the same as goodness. The film teaches that those who control knowledge control people. Asking questions is more dangerous than any weapon to those in power. A child's sense of right and wrong can cut through lies that fool grown men and women. And the bond between a person and their soul, however you understand that, is worth protecting above all else.
