Lethal Weapon 4

Lethal Weapon 4 movie poster

Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), directed by Richard Donner, sends Riggs and Murtaugh against a Chinese crime lord who smuggles families into the country and uses them as slave labour. Mel Gibson plays Riggs, now facing fatherhood. Danny Glover plays Murtaugh, still too old for this.

Jet Li plays Wah Sing Ku, a ruthless Triad leader who brings a physical threat unlike anything Riggs has faced before. Joe Pesci returns as Leo Getz. Chris Rock plays Lee Butters, a young detective who is secretly dating Murtaugh's daughter. Rene Russo returns as Lorna Cole, now pregnant with Riggs's child. The film runs two hours and seven minutes. It is the fourth and final film in the series.

Why You Should Watch

Jet Li raises the action to a level the series had not reached. His fights with Mel Gibson are fast, brutal, and shot with a clarity that lets you see every move. He plays Wah Sing Ku with a quiet menace that needs no words. The opening scene, where Riggs and Murtaugh face a man in body armour with a flame thrower, sets the tone. This film goes bigger than the rest and does not apologise for it.

Chris Rock adds fresh energy to the group. His nervousness around Murtaugh is funny because the fear is real. The family theme runs through everything. Riggs is about to become a father. Murtaugh is about to become a grandfather. Both men face the question of what their dangerous lives mean when new lives depend on them. The final act brings real feeling to a series that always balanced humour and heart. It is a fitting end for two characters who earned their rest.

Favourite Quote

"We are not too old for this."

Riggs and Murtaugh say this together near the end. After four films of Murtaugh insisting he is too old, the line flips. They have been through everything together. The words carry pride, stubbornness, and a friendship that outlasted every bullet and explosion the series threw at them.

Takeaway

Growing older does not mean stepping aside. The film teaches that the family you build gives you more to fight for, not less. The most dangerous enemy is the one who feels nothing. Friendship tested across years and danger becomes something that cannot be broken. And knowing when to stop matters as much as knowing when to start.
