Johnny English Strikes Again

Johnny English Strikes Again (2018), directed by David Kerr, follows Johnny English as he comes out of retirement to stop a cyber attack that has exposed every active spy in Britain. Rowan Atkinson plays Johnny, now a geography teacher who longs for the old days.
A hacker reveals the identity of every British agent. With no one left, MI7 turns to its retired operatives. Johnny gets the call. Ben Miller returns as Bough, loyal as ever. Olga Kurylenko plays Ophelia, a Russian agent whose loyalties shift. Emma Thompson plays the Prime Minister, who must deal with Johnny's chaos while trying to secure a deal with a Silicon Valley billionaire played by Jake Lacy. The film runs one hour and 28 minutes.
Why You Should Watch
The return of Ben Miller as Bough gives the film a warmth the second one lacked. Their partnership is the heart of the series, and watching them work together again feels right. Johnny's refusal to use modern technology while the world runs on it provides steady comedy. He insists on old methods, physical disguises, paper maps, and actual legwork, and the joke is that sometimes they work.
Emma Thompson plays the Prime Minister with a sharpness that lifts every scene she enters. The tech villain angle gives the story a timely edge. Johnny stumbles through a world of virtual reality and data harvesting with the confidence of a man who still trusts a good trench coat over any algorithm. The film is the shortest and lightest of the three. It does not try to be more than it is, and that honesty serves it well.
Favourite Quote
"The old ways are the best ways."
Johnny says this while the world around him runs on screens and code. He is wrong about most things, but the film lets him be right about this one just often enough to keep you guessing.
Takeaway
Technology is only as good as the people who control it. The film teaches that trusting a machine with everything makes you vulnerable when the machine fails. Old skills still have value in a new world. The people who know you best make you better, not the gadgets. And there is something to be said for a person who refuses to change, even when the whole world insists.
