John Wick

John Wick (2014), directed by Chad Stahelski, follows a retired hitman who returns to the criminal underworld after a group of thugs steal his car and kill the puppy his dying wife left him. Keanu Reeves plays John Wick, a man the whole underworld fears.
Michael Nyqvist plays Viggo Tarasov, a Russian crime boss whose son committed the theft without knowing who he robbed. When Viggo learns what his son has done, he does not punish him. He calls John and tries to reason with him. It does not work. Willem Dafoe plays Marcus, an old friend and fellow assassin. Ian McShane plays Winston, the owner of the Continental, a hotel where no business may be conducted. The film runs one hour and 41 minutes.
Why You Should Watch
The film builds its world through small details. The Continental, the gold coins, the rules that every killer follows. None of it is explained at length. You pick it up as you go, and that trust in the audience makes the world feel larger than what you see on screen. The moment Viggo hears John Wick's name and his face falls tells you everything about the man before a single punch is thrown.
Keanu Reeves moves through the action with a precision that changed how fight scenes are filmed. The camera stays wide and steady. You see every hit, every reload, every shift in stance. Chad Stahelski, a former stunt coordinator, knows how to shoot a body in motion. The grief underneath drives it all. John is not angry. He is hollow. The dog was the last thread connecting him to his wife, and when it was cut, there was nothing left to hold him back.
Favourite Quote
"People keep asking if I am back. Yeah, I am thinking I am back."
John says this after his first night of violence. The line is quiet and tired. He does not want to be back. But the world pulled him in and he knows there is no stopping now.
Takeaway
Some lines should never be crossed. The film teaches that grief turned outward becomes a force nothing can stop. The rules that hold a dangerous world together exist for good reason. Underestimating a quiet person is a costly mistake. And the smallest thing, a dog, a memory, a promise, can mean more than anyone on the outside would ever guess.
