Iron Man

Iron Man (2008), directed by Jon Favreau, follows a billionaire weapons maker who builds a suit of armour to escape captivity and decides to use it to protect the world. Robert Downey Jr. plays Tony Stark, a genius with more charm than sense.

Tony is captured by terrorists in Afghanistan and forced to build a missile. Instead he builds a crude suit of armour and fights his way out. Back home he refines the design and becomes Iron Man. Gwyneth Paltrow plays Pepper Potts, his assistant who keeps his life from falling apart. Jeff Bridges plays Obadiah Stane, his father's old business partner who has plans of his own. Terrence Howard plays James Rhodes, Tony's friend in the military. The film runs two hours and six minutes. It was the first film in what became the Marvel series of films.

Robert Downey Jr. makes Tony Stark feel real. He plays him as a man who talks fast, thinks faster, and hides everything that hurts behind a joke. The scenes in the cave where he builds the first suit are the best in the film. You watch a man who made weapons for profit face the cost of what he sold. That change drives everything that follows.

Jon Favreau keeps the film grounded. The suit looks heavy. The flight tests go wrong. Tony bleeds and bruises. It feels like a man learning to do something impossible rather than a hero who simply arrives. Jeff Bridges plays Stane with a friendly menace that works because you trust him before you suspect him.
