Ice Age

Ice Age (2002), directed by Chris Wedge, is an animated film set during the last ice age. Three mismatched animals band together to return a lost human baby to its tribe. Ray Romano voices Manny, a grumpy woolly mammoth who would rather be left alone.

John Leguizamo voices Sid, a clumsy sloth abandoned by his family who latches onto Manny for company. Denis Leary voices Diego, a sabre-toothed tiger sent by his pack to steal the baby but who slowly changes his mind. The trio crosses glaciers and volcanoes with the child, hunted by Diego's pack the whole way. The film runs one hour and 21 minutes. Scrat, a small sabre-toothed squirrel chasing an acorn, appears throughout and became one of the most recognised characters in animated film.

Why You Should Watch

The film keeps things simple. Three animals, one baby, and a long walk through the ice. That is enough. Ray Romano gives Manny a weariness that hints at a loss he does not talk about. When you learn what happened to him, it changes every scene that came before. John Leguizamo makes Sid annoying and lovable in equal measure. Denis Leary plays Diego's shift from hunter to protector without rushing it.

The animation holds up because the story does not lean on spectacle. The landscapes are vast and cold, and the characters feel small against them, which is the point. Scrat's silent battles with his acorn provide comedy that works for all ages. The film runs short and wastes nothing. It tells a story about unlikely families forming in hard times, and it does so without ever getting heavy.

Manny says this after spending the whole film insisting he does not need anyone. The line marks the moment he stops pretending. It is plain and honest and says everything about what the journey taught him.
