Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), directed by James Gunn, follows a group of criminals and misfits who are thrown together in a space prison and must work as a team to stop a fanatic from destroying an entire planet. Chris Pratt plays Peter Quill, a thief who calls himself Star-Lord.

Zoe Saldana plays Gamora, an assassin raised by the warlord Thanos who wants to break free from him. Dave Bautista plays Drax the Destroyer, a warrior driven by grief and revenge. Bradley Cooper voices Rocket, a genetically altered raccoon with a talent for weapons and a short temper. Vin Diesel voices Groot, a tree creature who says only three words. The film runs two hours and two minutes. James Gunn also co-wrote the screenplay.

Why You Should Watch

The film works because it does not take itself too seriously. Chris Pratt plays Quill as a man who covers his pain with jokes and old pop songs. The mixtape his dying mother gave him as a child becomes the soundtrack of the film, and those songs give it a warmth that most space adventures lack. The opening scene, where Quill dances alone through alien ruins to Redbone's Come and Get Your Love, tells you everything about the tone.

Dave Bautista is a surprise. He plays Drax with a deadpan honesty that produces some of the best laughs in the film. Rocket and Groot should not work as characters, but they do because the writing gives them real feeling beneath the fur and bark. James Gunn found a way to make a film about a talking raccoon and a tree that sits comfortably next to the biggest blockbusters of its decade. It is funny, fast, and has more heart than it lets on.

Favourite Quote

"We are Groot."

Groot says this at the moment it matters most. He has only ever said "I am Groot." The shift from "I" to "we" is small and it changes everything. It means he has found something worth more than himself.

Takeaway

The people who seem least likely to care about others are often the ones who need a family the most. The film teaches that grief does not go away but it can be shared. Strength is not the same as toughness. Letting people in is harder than keeping them out. And a good song at the right moment can hold a broken group together.
