Allied (2016), directed by Robert Zemeckis, is a wartime thriller set during the Second World War. Brad Pitt plays Max Vatan, a Canadian intelligence officer who falls in love with a French resistance fighter during a mission in North Africa.

Marion Cotillard plays Marianne Beausejour, a woman who may not be who she claims. Max and Marianne pose as husband and wife in Casablanca to carry out an assassination. The act becomes real. They marry and move to London, where they build a life together while bombs fall on the city. Then Max receives word that Marianne may be a German spy. The film runs two hours and four minutes. Steven Knight wrote the screenplay.

Why You Should Watch

The film works because of what it does not say. Brad Pitt plays Max as a man who trusts his instincts until the one moment it matters most. Marion Cotillard gives Marianne a warmth that makes you want to believe her, which is exactly the problem Max faces. Every smile, every touch, every quiet evening at home carries a second meaning once the suspicion lands.

Robert Zemeckis builds the tension through stillness rather than action. The Casablanca scenes glow with heat and colour. The London scenes feel colder and greyer, as if the world itself has changed. The story asks a simple question and stretches it across the whole film. Can you love someone you might not know? That question has no clean answer, and the film is honest enough not to offer one.

Favourite Quote

"Keep the emotions real. That is how you survive."

Max receives this advice before his mission in Casablanca. It is meant as a rule for spying, but it becomes the thread that runs through his whole life with Marianne. The line cuts both ways. Real feelings make the best cover, and the best cover can become real feelings.

Takeaway

Trust is the foundation of love, and doubt can destroy it even when the truth is kind. The film teaches that war turns everyone into a version of themselves they did not choose. The people closest to you carry secrets you may never learn. Courage is not always fighting. Sometimes it is choosing to believe someone when every sign tells you not to.
