What is wifip2pd?

You might spot wifip2pd in Activity Monitor. It handles direct wireless connections between devices.

What is wifip2pd?

wifip2pd stands for "Wi-Fi Peer-to-Peer daemon". It manages Wi-Fi Direct and AWDL (Apple Wireless Direct Link) connections between Apple devices. These are direct wireless links that do not go through your Wi-Fi router.

What features use it?

wifip2pd powers several Apple features:

These features create a short-lived, direct Wi-Fi link between devices, and wifip2pd manages that link.

Does it affect Wi-Fi speed?

AWDL connections share the same Wi-Fi hardware as your normal connection. This can sometimes cause brief pauses or slower speeds on your regular Wi-Fi while an AirDrop transfer or AirPlay session is running.

Can you turn it off?

There is no direct switch for wifip2pd. Turning off AirDrop and AirPlay would reduce its activity. You do not normally need to turn it off.

Should you worry?

No. It is a normal macOS process. It only becomes active when features like AirDrop or AirPlay are in use or scanning for nearby devices.
