What is warmd?

warmd helps apps open faster.

What is warmd?

warmd preloads apps you use often into memory before you open them. When you launch an app that warmd has already loaded, it opens noticeably faster because the data is already in RAM.

How does it know what to preload?

warmd works with coreduetd and other system services to guess which apps you are likely to open, based on:

Does it waste RAM?

macOS manages memory on the fly. The preloaded data uses memory that would otherwise sit empty. If another app needs that memory, macOS frees it straight away. There is no downside. Unused RAM is wasted RAM, so using it for preloading gives free speed.

Does it affect battery life?

Very little. Reading data from the SSD into RAM is fast and uses little energy on modern Macs. The gain from faster app launches outweighs the small energy cost.

Should you worry?

No. It is a normal macOS feature that makes your Mac feel faster.
