What is usbsmartcardreaderd?
usbsmartcardreaderd manages USB smart card readers on your Mac.
What is usbsmartcardreaderd?
usbsmartcardreaderd detects when a smart card reader is plugged in by USB, sets it up, and makes it available to the rest of the smart card system (ifdreader, ctkd).
How does it fit with the other smart card processes?
The smart card system on macOS has several layers:
- usbsmartcardreaderd detects and sets up USB card reader hardware
- ifdreader talks to the reader using the CCID protocol
- ctkd (CryptoTokenKit daemon) provides security operations to apps
usbsmartcardreaderd is the first layer. It handles the USB side.
When does it run?
Only when a USB smart card reader is connected. If you do not use smart cards, this process is not active.
Who needs this?
The same people who need ifdreader and ctkd: mainly government, military, and large organisation users who log in with PIV or CAC smart cards.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS process for USB smart card reader support.
