What is usbaudiod?

usbaudiod appears when you plug a USB audio device into your Mac.

What is usbaudiod?

usbaudiod is the USB audio daemon. It manages USB headsets, microphones, audio interfaces, speakers, and other sound hardware connected by USB. It provides built-in driver support so that standard USB audio devices work without installing anything extra.

What is USB Audio Class?

USB Audio Class is a standard that says how USB sound devices should behave. Devices that follow this standard work with macOS straight away, with no driver needed. usbaudiod provides that support.

Most consumer USB headsets, microphones, and audio interfaces follow this standard.

When does it run?

usbaudiod starts when a USB audio device is connected. If no USB audio device is plugged in, it is not running.

Does it use many resources?

Very few. It handles the link between macOS and the USB device. The actual sound processing happens in coreaudiod.

What if my USB audio device does not work?

If a standard USB audio device is not recognised:

  1. Try a different USB port
  2. Restart coreaudiod: sudo killall coreaudiod
  3. Check System Settings, Sound to see if the device appears
  4. Check System Information, USB to confirm the device is detected

Some professional audio interfaces need their own drivers and do not use usbaudiod.

Should you worry?

No. It is a normal macOS process for USB audio support. It only runs when USB sound hardware is connected.
