What is UpdateSettings?
UpdateSettings manages your software update preferences on your Mac.
What does it control?
- Whether to check for updates on its own
- Whether to download updates in the background
- Whether to install macOS updates on its own
- Whether to install Rapid Security Responses on its own
- Whether to install system data files and security updates on its own
You can change these in System Settings, then General, then Software Update, then Automatic Updates.
Why is it a separate process?
Update settings apply across the whole system, no matter which user is logged in. UpdateSettings runs at the system level so these choices stay in place for everyone.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS process that stores your software update choices.
