What is triald?
triald (sometimes shown as triald.system) handles feature management for Apple.
What is triald?
triald manages "trials", Apple's system for testing features and rolling them out step by step. It lets Apple turn features on or off from a distance and test different setups across a share of users.
What does it do?
triald handles:
- Receiving feature settings from Apple servers
- Turning features on or off based on trial groups
- Gathering anonymous figures on how features perform
- Rolling out new features bit by bit
What features does it control?
Apple does not say which features go through trials, but it is often used for:
- New interface elements tested with some users
- Backend changes rolled out step by step
- Features that need to be switched off quickly if something goes wrong
Is it tracking me?
Trial groups are anonymous. Apple uses device groups, not individual tracking, to manage rollouts. The system works out which group your device belongs to without identifying you.
Should you worry?
No. Rolling out features step by step is standard practice in software. It lets problems be caught before they reach everyone. Most large software companies do the same.
