What is system_installd?
system_installd handles privileged installation tasks on your Mac.
What is system_installd?
It is the system-level installer daemon. While installd handles normal package installs, system_installd deals with installs that need system-level access: writing to protected system folders, changing system settings, and installing system extensions.
When does it run?
system_installd is active during:
- macOS system updates
- Installs of packages that change system parts
- System extension installs
- Security updates and Rapid Security Responses
How is it different from installd?
installd handles standard .pkg installs started by users. system_installd handles installs that need deeper system access. These are tasks that even an admin user cannot do directly, because they change the sealed system volume or other protected areas.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS process for system-level installs. It only runs during proper installation tasks.
