What are symptomsd and symptomsd-diag?

symptomsd is a network diagnostic process that runs in the background.

What is symptomsd?

It collects and studies network performance data, looking for signs of network trouble. It watches your connections for problems like high latency, lost packets, DNS failures, and dropped connections. It helps macOS pick the best network path.

What does it do?

symptomsd supports:

• Wi-Fi Assist: spotting when Wi-Fi is working poorly
• Network quality checks: judging the quality of available networks
• Multipath TCP choices: picking the best network path for connections
• Network diagnostics: gathering data when you run Wireless Diagnostics

The companion process symptomsd-diag handles the diagnostic data gathering and reporting.

Does it improve my network?

Yes, in a roundabout way. By watching network quality, it helps macOS decide which network to use and when to switch. If your Wi-Fi drops in quality, for example, symptomsd spots the problem and can nudge the system to use a better connection.

Does it send data to Apple?

Only if you have opted in to analytics sharing.

Should you worry?
