What is startupdiskhelper?
startupdiskhelper is a small helper process for choosing which disk your Mac boots from.
What is startupdiskhelper?
It handles the work behind the Startup Disk setting in System Settings. When you pick a different boot volume, this process makes the change.
When does it run?
startupdiskhelper runs when:
- You open System Settings, then General, then Startup Disk and choose a different volume
- The system needs to check or update the startup disk setting
- A macOS installer sets the new system as the startup disk
- Boot Camp Assistant sets a Windows partition as the startup disk
Why does it need special privileges?
Changing the startup disk writes to firmware settings (NVRAM) that control which volume the Mac boots from. This needs root access, which is why choosing a startup disk asks for your administrator password. startupdiskhelper is the process that makes the actual change.
Does it use many resources?
No. It runs only during startup disk changes, which most people do rarely.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS helper. You will rarely notice it unless you are changing your startup disk.
