What is srp-mdns-proxy?

srp-mdns-proxy is a networking process for smart home devices.

What is srp-mdns-proxy?

It acts as a bridge between two ways devices find each other on a network. Thread-based smart home devices use SRP (Service Registration Protocol). The rest of your network uses mDNS (multicast DNS, also known as Bonjour). This process links the two so Thread devices can be found by other devices on your home network.

What is Thread?

Thread is a low-power mesh network used by modern smart home devices, especially those built on the Matter standard. Devices such as smart bulbs, sensors, and locks use Thread to talk to each other. Your Mac, Apple TV, or HomePod can act as a Thread Border Router.

When is it active?

srp-mdns-proxy runs when your Mac is part of a Thread network, usually when it is acting as a border router for smart home devices. If you do not use HomeKit or Thread devices, this process will not be active.

Should you worry?

No. It is a normal macOS process that helps your Thread smart home devices work with the rest of your network.
