What is SafeEjectGPUStartupDaemon?
SafeEjectGPUStartupDaemon handles the safe removal of external graphics cards (eGPUs) on supported Macs.
What does it do?
When you connect an external GPU through Thunderbolt, apps and windows may start using it for drawing. If you just pulled the cable out, those apps would crash. This process moves everything back to the built-in graphics chip first:
- Finds all apps using the external GPU
- Moves windows from the external display to the built-in one
- Shifts graphics work back to the internal chip
- Frees the external GPU
- Lets you safely unplug it
When does it run?
On Intel Macs with Thunderbolt 3 that support external GPUs. It starts when the Mac boots (in case an eGPU was unplugged while the Mac was off) and when you click the eject button in the menu bar.
Apple Silicon Macs do not support external GPUs, so this process does not apply to them.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS process for managing external graphics cards on supported models.
