What is postupgraded?
postupgraded is a process that runs after a macOS update.
What is postupgraded?
postupgraded handles cleanup tasks once a macOS update has been installed. It runs during the first startup after an update to finish the upgrade and tidy up.
What does it do?
After a macOS update, postupgraded takes care of:
- Moving settings and preferences to new formats
- Updating system databases and caches
- Running data migration scripts for updated parts of the system
- Removing temporary files left over from the update
- Rebuilding caches that need to be fresh for the new version
When does it run?
Only after a macOS update. It runs once on the first startup after the update and then stays quiet until the next one.
Does it use many resources?
For a short time, yes. The first startup after a macOS update can feel slower because postupgraded and related processes are doing migration work. This is normal and passes quickly.
Should you worry?
No. It is a standard part of the macOS update process. If your Mac seems slow after an update, give it time to finish these tasks.
