What is PasswordService?
PasswordService is a process tied to directory services login on macOS.
What is PasswordService?
PasswordService handles password checks for Open Directory, Apple's directory services system. It verifies user passwords against a directory server and supports several login methods.
When does it run?
PasswordService is mainly active on:
- Macs running macOS Server with Open Directory set up
- Macs that are bound to an Open Directory server for user login
On a personal Mac with no directory service, PasswordService is not active.
What login methods does it support?
It can handle several password check methods:
- CRAM-MD5
- DIGEST-MD5
- NTLM (for Windows compatibility)
- APOP (for older mail server login)
These are mostly relevant in workplace and server settings.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS directory services part. If you see it running on a Mac that is not set up with Open Directory, it is worth checking whether a configuration profile or management tool started it.
