What is opendirectoryd?

opendirectoryd runs all the time on your Mac. It looks up user account details.

What is opendirectoryd?

opendirectoryd is the Open Directory daemon. It handles user and group account lookups, logins, and identity checks. Whenever macOS needs to know something about a user account (name, home folder, group membership), it asks opendirectoryd.

What does it do?

The daemon manages:

Why is it always running?

Almost everything on macOS involves user identity. File permissions, process ownership, and logins all depend on it. opendirectoryd answers questions like "which user owns this file?" and "is this user an admin?" Even listing files in the Terminal needs user and group lookups.

Does it use many resources?

Usually very little. On Macs bound to Active Directory or other directory services, it can use more during lookups, especially if the directory server is slow.

Should you worry?

No. It is a core macOS process that has been part of the system since the early days of Mac OS X.
