What is online-authd?
online-authd (sometimes shown as online-authd.xpc) verifies your credentials against Apple's servers when your Mac cannot check them locally.
When does it run?
The process steps in when:
- Your Mac needs to check Apple ID credentials online
- A login needs to be confirmed by a remote server
- Certain security tasks need online checks
It acts as a bridge between your Mac and Apple's identity servers.
How is it different from akd?
akd (the AuthKit daemon) manages the broader Apple ID login flow. online-authd deals only with cases where an online check is needed. The two work together.
Does it use many resources?
No. It handles login requests as they arrive and stays idle the rest of the time.
Should you worry?
No. It is a standard macOS process that checks your credentials safely against Apple's servers when needed.
