What is musicd?
musicd is a background process linked to the Music app on your Mac.
What is musicd?
musicd is the Apple Music daemon. It handles background work for the Music app: managing your music library, syncing with iCloud Music Library, and handling Apple Music streaming tasks.
What does it do?
musicd manages:
- Library management: indexing and sorting your local music library
- iCloud Music Library sync: keeping your library in sync across all your Apple devices
- Apple Music: managing your Apple Music subscription, playlists, and suggestions
- Downloads: handling background downloads of songs and albums for offline listening
- Metadata: updating song details, artwork, and play counts
Why does it run when Music is not open?
musicd runs on its own, apart from the Music app. It keeps syncing your library, downloading music for offline listening, and updating details in the background. This is why new music you add on your iPhone can show up on your Mac even if you have not opened Music.
Does it use many resources?
It can use noticeable resources when:
- Syncing a large music library for the first time
- Downloading many songs for offline listening
- Rebuilding the music library database after an update
During normal use, it is light.
Can you stop it?
If you do not use Apple Music or the Music app, musicd will have very little to do. There is no direct switch to turn it off, but it will sit mostly idle if there is no library to manage.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS process that keeps your music library tidy and in sync.
