What is micactivityd?

micactivityd (shown as audio.micactivityd) is a privacy-related audio process on your Mac.

What is micactivityd?

micactivityd watches microphone use on your Mac. It tracks which apps are using the microphone and drives the orange dot that appears in the menu bar when an app is listening through the mic.

What is the orange dot?

Starting with macOS Monterey, an orange dot appears in the menu bar whenever an app uses the microphone (a green dot appears for the camera). micactivityd detects microphone access and triggers this dot. Clicking on Control Centre shows which app is using the mic at that moment.

Why does it exist?

micactivityd is a privacy feature. It makes sure you always know when an app is listening through your microphone. The dot is tied to the system's audio layer, so a rogue app cannot easily hide its microphone use.

Does it use many resources?

No. It watches the microphone state passively and uses almost no resources.

Can you turn it off?

You cannot turn off micactivityd or the orange dot. That is by design. It is a privacy guard that makes microphone access always visible to you.

Should you worry?

No. In fact, it protects you. If you see the orange dot when no app should be using your microphone, find out which app is using it through Control Centre. You can take away microphone permissions in System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Microphone.
