What is kuncd?

kuncd is a small system process that bridges the kernel and user space.

What is kuncd?

kuncd stands for Kernel User Notification Centre daemon. It delivers messages from the kernel to the user interface. When something happens at the kernel level that the user needs to know about, kuncd makes sure the message reaches the desktop.

What messages does it deliver?

Kernel messages include:

Why a separate daemon?

The kernel cannot show windows or dialog boxes on its own. It works at a much lower level than the graphical interface. kuncd bridges this gap: it receives kernel messages and shows them as standard macOS dialog boxes.

Does it use a lot of resources?

No. It waits for kernel messages and briefly shows them. It is one of the lightest processes on the system.

Should you worry?

No. It is a basic macOS process. If you see frequent messages from it, pay attention to what they say. They mean something the kernel thinks is important enough to tell you about.
