What is iomfb_fdr_loader?

iomfb_fdr_loader is a display-related process on Apple Silicon Macs.

What is iomfb_fdr_loader?

iomfb_fdr_loader loads FDR (Factory Data Restore) data for the display system. FDR data holds factory calibration details unique to your display panel: colour profiles, brightness curves, and other measurements taken during manufacturing.

Why does each display need its own data?

Every display panel has slight differences from the factory. To get accurate colours and brightness, Apple measures each panel during production and stores calibration data unique to it. iomfb_fdr_loader loads this data so the display system can adjust for your particular panel.

This is one reason Apple displays are known for good colour accuracy. The calibration is not generic; it is tailored to your exact screen.

When does it run?

The loader runs at boot to load the factory calibration data. It may also run when display settings change, for example when you connect an external display or wake from sleep.

Does it use a lot of resources?

No. It loads calibration data and stops. It is not a process that runs all the time.

Should you worry?

No. It is a standard Apple Silicon display process that makes sure your screen looks as it should.
