What is GSSCred?
GSSCred is a process tied to workplace login systems that you may see in Activity Monitor.
What is GSSCred?
GSSCred is the credential manager for the GSS-API (Generic Security Services interface). In plain terms, it manages Kerberos tickets and other security credentials used for workplace network login.
What is Kerberos?
Kerberos is a login method widely used in workplaces, especially with Microsoft Active Directory. Instead of sending your password to every service, Kerberos gives you a "ticket" that proves who you are. GSSCred manages these tickets on your Mac.
When is it active?
GSSCred matters when:
- Your Mac is joined to an Active Directory domain
- You use workplace file shares, email, or intranet sites that rely on Kerberos
- You use Single Sign-On in a workplace
- An app uses GSS-API for login
On a personal Mac with no workplace network, GSSCred has nothing to do.
Can you see your Kerberos tickets?
Yes. Open the Ticket Viewer app (search for it in Spotlight) or run:
klist
This shows any active Kerberos tickets on your Mac.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS process for managing workplace login credentials. If your Mac is not part of a workplace network, it sits idle.
