What is findmymacmessenger?
findmymacmessenger works alongside findmymac as part of the Find My Mac system.
What is findmymacmessenger?
findmymacmessenger handles the link between your Mac and Apple's Find My servers. When you send a command from the Find My app, such as "Play Sound", "Lock", or "Erase", findmymacmessenger receives that command and passes it to findmymac to carry out.
How does it receive commands?
The messenger listens for commands through Apple's push notification system (apsd). When you trigger an action in the Find My app on your iPhone or on iCloud.com, the command is pushed to your Mac. findmymacmessenger picks it up and findmymac acts on it.
What commands does it handle?
- Play Sound: triggers a loud alert on your Mac
- Lock: locks the screen with a passcode and a message you choose
- Erase: starts a remote wipe of all data
- Location request: replies with the Mac's current location
Does it use many resources?
No. It keeps a light connection through the push notification system and only wakes up when a command arrives.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal part of the Find My Mac system. It only responds to commands linked to your Apple ID. Nobody else can send commands to your Mac through this system.
