What is familycontrols?
familycontrols is a process that enforces parental controls and Screen Time on macOS.
What is familycontrols?
familycontrols carries out the rules set through Family Sharing and Screen Time. It blocks apps, enforces content limits, and tracks usage when these features are turned on.
What does it enforce?
familycontrols manages:
- App limits: blocking apps once the daily time limit runs out
- Downtime: enforcing set hours when only chosen apps can be used
- Content restrictions: blocking adult content and limiting web access
- App Store restrictions: stopping purchases or downloads without approval
- Communication limits: controlling who a child account can contact
- Screen Time reports: tracking app usage for the Screen Time summary
When is it active?
The process runs when:
- Screen Time is turned on
- The Mac has a child account with Family Sharing rules
- A management profile with app restrictions is installed
If Screen Time is off and no restrictions are set, it has nothing to do.
Can you get around it?
On a child account, only a parent or guardian can override the restrictions by entering the Screen Time passcode. This is by design. The rules would be pointless if the child could turn them off.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS process for parental controls and Screen Time.
