What is eapolcfg_auth?
eapolcfg_auth is a process for network login that most home users will never see in action.
What is eapolcfg_auth?
eapolcfg_auth handles setup and login for EAPOL (Extensible Authentication Protocol over LAN). This is the system behind 802.1X, a standard for controlling who can use a network. It is common in offices and universities.
When is it used?
802.1X is used when a network needs each person to log in separately. This is common in:
- Office Wi-Fi and wired networks
- University campus networks
- Hospital and government networks
- Any organisation that checks each user before granting network access
If you connect to a Wi-Fi network that asks for a username and password (not just a shared Wi-Fi password), 802.1X and eapolcfg_auth are likely at work.
Do I need it?
If you do not connect to networks that use 802.1X, this process will not be active. Home Wi-Fi networks use a shared password, which does not involve eapolcfg_auth.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS part that handles the safe exchange of login details when you connect to protected networks.
