What is displaypolicyd?
displaypolicyd is a process that controls how your Mac screen behaves.
What is displaypolicyd?
displaypolicyd sets the rules for your display. It decides how brightness, refresh rate, HDR, and power saving should work under different conditions.
What does it manage?
The process handles:
- ProMotion: changing the refresh rate (24Hz to 120Hz) on screens that support it
- Auto Brightness: adjusting screen brightness based on the light around you
- True Tone: shifting colour temperature to match your surroundings
- HDR content: switching display modes when you watch HDR video
- Display sleep: turning the screen off after a period of no use
- Night Shift: warming the screen colour in the evening
Does it affect external displays?
displaypolicyd mainly controls the built-in screen. It can also affect Apple displays like the Studio Display and Pro Display XDR.
Does it use many resources?
No. It runs quietly in the background with very little impact.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS process that keeps your display working properly.
