What are the diagnosticextensions helpers?
You might see processes with long names like diagnosticextensions.osx.spotlight.helper or diagnosticextensions.osx.timemachine.helper in Activity Monitor.
What are these processes?
They are diagnostic helpers that gather troubleshooting data for specific macOS features:
- diagnosticextensions.osx.spotlight.helper: gathers data about Spotlight indexing, including index status, performance, errors, and settings
- diagnosticextensions.osx.timemachine.helper: gathers data about Time Machine, including backup status, errors, performance, and settings
When do they run?
These helpers usually run when:
- You create a system diagnostic report (using
sysdiagnoseor through Apple Support) - The diagnostic system spots a problem with Spotlight or Time Machine
- Apple Support asks you to capture diagnostic data for troubleshooting
They do not run all the time. They start up on demand, take a snapshot of the system's state, and stop.
What data do they collect?
- Spotlight helper: indexing status, index size, recent indexing work, any errors blocking indexing, and Spotlight settings
- Time Machine helper: backup history, last backup status, any errors, excluded items, backup destination details, and Time Machine settings
Should you worry?
No. They are standard macOS diagnostic tools that help fix problems with Spotlight search and Time Machine backups. They run briefly, gather technical data, and exit.
