What is cryptexd?
cryptexd is a process that arrived with recent macOS versions.
What is cryptexd?
cryptexd manages cryptexes. A cryptex is a sealed disk image that Apple uses to deliver Rapid Security Responses and other system parts. The name blends "cryptographically" and "extension".
What are Rapid Security Responses?
Rapid Security Responses let Apple ship urgent security fixes between full macOS updates. Instead of downloading a whole system update, your Mac gets a small cryptex with just the patch. This makes it much faster to fix serious problems.
You may have seen updates with a letter at the end, like "macOS 14.1.2 (a)". Those are Rapid Security Responses delivered through cryptexes.
What does cryptexd do?
The daemon handles:
- Receiving and checking Rapid Security Response updates
- Mounting and managing cryptex disk images
- Making sure applied patches have not been tampered with
- Managing the life of installed cryptexes
Is it always running?
cryptexd runs when needed, mainly when a Rapid Security Response is being downloaded, checked, or applied. It also runs now and then to verify that installed cryptexes are still intact.
Should you worry?
No. It is a standard macOS security process that lets Apple deliver urgent fixes faster.
