What is countryd?
countryd is a small background process that works out which country your Mac is in.
What is countryd?
countryd finds your Mac's current country or region. macOS uses this to turn features on or off depending on where you are, to follow local rules, and to show the right content for your region.
What does it affect?
Country detection shapes:
- Which Apple services are available (Apple Pay, Apple Card, Apple News)
- Content restrictions and ratings systems
- Features required by local law (privacy rules, right-to-repair details)
- Region-specific features (certain Siri features, transit directions)
How does it work out the country?
countryd uses several clues:
- Your Mac's region setting
- Your Apple ID country
- Network-based hints
- SIM card region (on Macs that can detect a nearby iPhone's SIM)
Does it track my location?
No. countryd finds the country, not your exact spot. It is a rough check used for feature availability, not a location tracker.
Should you worry?
No. It is a standard macOS process that makes sure you get the right features and services for your region.
