What is ContainerMigrationService?
ContainerMigrationService moves app sandbox container data when an app updates and its container layout or location changes. Sandboxed apps store their data in containers at ~/Library/Containers/. When an app changes its container structure, this service shifts the data to the new layout.
When does it run?
The service runs when:
- An app update changes the container's group name
- A macOS update changes container formats
- An app moves from one container scheme to another
- During Migration Assistant transfers where container data needs adjusting
Does it affect my data?
The migration keeps your data safe. It moves data from the old container structure to the new one. You should not lose any app data during this process.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS process that makes sure your app data survives app and system updates.
