What is bosreporter?
bosreporter is a diagnostics process that tracks how your Mac starts up and shuts down.
What is bosreporter?
bosreporter stands for Boot/OS reporter. It gathers data about boot and shutdown events on your Mac: how long the boot took, whether the last shutdown was clean, and other details about startup and shutdown speed.
What data does it gather?
bosreporter records:
- Boot time and how long it took
- Whether the last shutdown was clean or forced (power loss, crash)
- Timing of each startup stage
- Timing of each shutdown stage
- Anything odd during boot or shutdown
This data helps Apple find and fix boot speed problems in macOS updates.
Does it send data to Apple?
Only if you have opted into sharing analytics in System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Analytics and Improvements. Otherwise the data stays on your Mac.
Does it use many resources?
No. It runs briefly during boot and shutdown to record timing data. It may run now and then to process and send gathered data.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS diagnostics process. If you are concerned about data gathering, you can turn off analytics sharing in System Settings.
