What is bluetoothd?
You will see several Bluetooth processes in Activity Monitor. Here is what each one does.
What are the Bluetooth processes?
macOS uses several processes together to manage Bluetooth:
- bluetoothd: the main Bluetooth daemon that manages all Bluetooth work, including pairing, connections, data transfer, and protocol handling
- BTServer.le: handles Bluetooth Low Energy connections, used by modern accessories, health devices, AirTags, and smart home devices
- BlueTool: a lower-level tool that handles Bluetooth hardware setup and firmware commands
- bluetoothuiservice: manages the Bluetooth interface elements, such as the menu bar icon, pairing windows, and device connection alerts
What does bluetoothd manage?
bluetoothd is the main daemon and handles all things Bluetooth:
- Pairing and connecting devices (AirPods, keyboards, mice, speakers)
- Audio streaming (A2DP, HFP protocols)
- File transfer (AirDrop uses Bluetooth for finding nearby devices)
- Continuity features (Handoff, Universal Clipboard, Instant Hotspot)
- Find My network (Bluetooth beacons)
- Input devices (keyboards, mice, trackpads)
Why does Bluetooth sometimes play up?
Bluetooth on macOS can have connection troubles from time to time. Common fixes:
- Turn Bluetooth off and on from the menu bar
- Remove and re-pair the problem device
- Reset the Bluetooth module: hold Shift + Option, click the Bluetooth menu bar icon, and pick "Reset the Bluetooth module" (older macOS versions)
- Delete Bluetooth preferences:
sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
Then restart your Mac.
Does it use many resources?
Normally no. CPU use can rise with active audio streaming (especially with several Bluetooth audio devices) or when many BLE devices are nearby.
Should you worry?
No. These are core macOS processes. If you do not use Bluetooth at all, you can turn it off in System Settings, but many features (AirDrop, Handoff, Apple Watch unlock, Find My) depend on it.
