What is autofsd?
autofsd is a background process that helps your Mac mount file systems on its own.
What is autofsd?
autofsd is the automounter settings daemon. It works with automountd to mount network file shares when you open them, without you having to connect by hand each time.
What does it do?
autofsd watches the automounter settings, which say which network shares should be mounted and where. When something changes (for example, when network conditions shift or a directory service sends new details), autofsd tells automountd to update its mounts.
When is it useful?
Automounting is mainly used in:
- Offices where network drives appear when you log in
- Setups with NFS or SMB shares that should be ready on demand
- Networks managed by directory services like Active Directory or Open Directory
On a personal Mac without network shares, autofsd loads but has nothing to do.
How is it different from automountd?
autofsd handles settings and triggers. It watches for changes and tells the system what should be automounted. automountd does the actual mounting when you open a set path.
Should you worry?
No. It is a standard Unix daemon for managing automatic file system mounts. It uses very few resources and is part of the normal macOS networking setup.
