What is AudioComponentRegistrar?
AudioComponentRegistrar is a process that deals with audio plugins on your Mac.
What is AudioComponentRegistrar?
AudioComponentRegistrar finds and registers audio components: Audio Unit plugins, audio codecs, and other audio add-ons installed on your Mac. It keeps a list of all available audio components so that apps like GarageBand, Logic Pro, and other music software can find and load them.
What are Audio Units?
Audio Units are the audio plugin format built into macOS. They include:
- Software instruments (synthesisers, samplers)
- Audio effects (reverb, equaliser, compressor)
- Audio codecs (AAC, FLAC decoders)
- MIDI processors
When you install a new audio plugin, AudioComponentRegistrar spots it and adds it to the system list so apps can see it.
When does it run?
The daemon runs when:
- macOS starts up and scans for audio components
- A new audio plugin is installed
- An app asks what audio components are available
- After a macOS update, when plugins need to be registered again
Does it use many resources?
Briefly, during startup or after installing new plugins. If you have many audio plugins installed, the first scan can take a moment. Otherwise it is lightweight.
Should you worry?
No. It is a normal macOS audio process. If an audio plugin does not show up in your music software, the problem may be that AudioComponentRegistrar failed to register it. Check Console.app for errors about the plugin.
